  Never wrestle with a demon, if you expect to survive unchanged...
  
  Kyūzō Hokuto sought the demon which had slain his master and the whole of his clan for a year, before he finally caught up with it. The unclean spirit took the form of an oni, and this guise Hokuto believed, until his blade pierced the thing's hide, and it revealed itself as a tengu. Seven days and nights their combat lasted, but Hokuto would not give up, the memory of his lord and family driving him on beyond the point of endurance. He thought it was all of his own doing, thinking surely that this strength was only his will for vengeance. It was not until he felt the bat-like wings burst forth from his back and the fire leap forth from his belly that he realized he was being changed even as he fought.
  

  
  "I thought they would be crow wings, tengu-sama."
  
  "I do not think feathers would suit you."
  
  "Why have you done this, demon?"
  
  "Because I can. Why does anybody do anything? Why did I slay your clan? Because I could. And now you will slay others for me, while I watch. Foolish mortal, you soon will --"
  

  
  The demon never finished its sentence, for its head was severed by Hokuto's blessed blade. Weakened from causing the ronin's transformation, the tengu shrieked and became nothing, the remaining portion of its power passing into Hokuto's sword and turning the blade black.
